Hi!
As a new BMWCCA LSC member the auto cross intrigues me, even though I only own a measly 328i.
I was wondering if the LSC offers newbie only events for auto crossing, perhaps at the start of the season? It seems intimidating to me (and I presume others) to jump straight into a group of experienced people to give auto crossing a try. An event that would cater to people that have never done this before would be much appreciated, potentially one where helmets can be rented, since most newbies will likely not have one in their garage.
If other car clubs already put these events on, I would appreciate information on that as well. Perhaps I will come out on the next event just to watch to see if I am up to embarrassing myself on the track next time around.
Thanks,
Christian

| Christian, Good question. First off, you can't embarrass yourself if you have no ego to start with. Hard to do, but makes the day a LOT more fun if you concentrate on learning the basic skills rather than where you end up in the standings. The local Porsche club has a intro to autocross/car control event early in the year, and they encourage non-Porsches to participate. It's a great way to break the ice. However, you'll find several experienced members at each autocross event that will be more than happy to ride with you; all you have to do is ask. Hope to see you out there Sunday! Mike #61

Rental helmet? That's nasty dude, you can get a good helmet for $100. I would suggest jumping in with both feet and registering for the next event. LSCBMW events are nearly 50-50; BMW & everything else, so you are in good company.

| Jump in....nobody is going to make you feel stupid because you are not a pro. Most of the members that participate do so on a volunteer non-professional basis. Most members are very helpful if they can be and most are willing to take time to help you out/answer questions/etc when they can. I would suggest that you watch the calender and announcements and try to attend the next track or driving event even if just as a spectator to get a taste of how it all works. This way you would get to meet the guys that do it and collect their thoughts. In closing....welcome!

Come out to the event this Sunday. There are several instructors available to ride with you and/or for you to ride with them. You are welcome to ride with me, 2003, M3.

Hey Christian!
We used to run a Car control Clinic/Intro to Autocross in the spring. With the advent of the Street Survival, which
we now do twice a year in Spring and Fall, we stopped running the Car Control Clinic. We currently run 10 autocrosses
a year, one of which is the night-time event and bumping that up to 11 events is a bit of a strain on the autocross committee.

Fortunately, autocross (like driving schools) are an event where one can come out to any event as beginner
and start the learning process. We have instructors that can ride with you in your car, and you can ride with
an instructor or committee member as Ken offered. From there, as a newbie, the most important thing is to focus
on your improvement. A first time autocrosser should look to learn the course and how to control their car,
and as this is done, then times will drop as the day goes on... having an instructor ride with you is a big help!
I encourage you to come out to one of our events THIS year, as opposed to waiting to NEXT year for an autocross
school.... we have several new autocrossers come out each and every event! You can always take class in the spring as you further your development. A PCA autotocross 101 event, or an Evolution school are great autocross teaching events.

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone, I'll definitely try to still attend an event this year, even if just to watch the process and maybe ride with someone.
And I'll try looking into a helmet. I guess renting one has its disadvantages.

Another non-Track, non-LSC event that is fun are the SCCA Rallys that are advertised here. I've only been on one, but it was alot of fun. Looks like there is one coming up soon.
