Tour Update

August 29th: First annual Gimmick Rally will occur but we need at minimum of 10 cars (with a driver and navigator). The Fun Run gimmick Rally is sponsored by the Lone Star Chapter of the BMW Car Club of America (LSC BMW CCA). A gimmick rally is essentially a scavenger hunt where a driver and navigator must find their way to an unknown destination using clues along the way to guide them. The route is pre-defined and handed out at the beginning of the event. Along the route, there are clues to decipher in order to “win” the rally.

The Fun Run Gimmick Rally is a self-paced, non-timed, street legal gimmick rally. The organizers of the event have covered thousands of miles choosing the route, selecting the gimmicks, and ensuring that fun will be had for drivers of all types. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

How can I participate in the fun? To participate, the driver must be a member of the BMW CCA and must pre-register. The minimum team consists of two people: a driver and a navigator. Simply email Brian George at bgeorge0049@gmail.com the names of your driver and navigator plus any other ride-along participants.

How does this differ from one of the tours that the club does? No leader, minimum of two people in each car, goal is to find the gimmicks along the pre-scribed route.

WHO: You and a navigator (if you are only 1 person, please tell Brian and we can look at teaming people up)
WHEN: 9:00 am August 29, 2015
WHERE: Reverchon Park in Downtown Dallas (3505 Maple Ave, Dallas, TX)
DISTANCE: 250 miles (will take us out of town)

NOTE: As of 8/18/2015, we have only received RSVPs from about 4 people that are willing to participate.  We will need to get close to 10 cars (20 people) in order to make a go of this.  If we have less than the 20 people, we will turn this into a tour event for 8/29/2015.

September 12th: Half-day tour from Lone Star Park. Come early to see the Auto Cross Group do some runs.  We will leave Lone Star Park about 1 p.m. and head down to the Loco Coyote Grill (1795 County Road 1004, Glen Rose, TX 76043) (web site: https://www.letseat.at/lococoyotegrill).  Preliminary maps are here.  Please let Ray and Brian know you will be attending the trip.

New: Sun, Oct 11-Tues, Oct 13: Fall tour to Eureka Springs.  Working on hotel options now but it looks like the a Sunday – Tues event will open up all kinds of hotels (weekends are booked solid for most hotels) and give us open roads to enjoy during our stay on Monday.  Our last trip in 2012, we stopped at the Crystal Bridges Museum (http://crystalbridges.org) in Bentonville, AR and we will add this to our route planning.  Please let Ray and Brian know if you will be attending this trip.

Update: August 1st: Social Event (Not a tour) You can RSVP at EventBrite.

Jack and Billie Rogers, members of the Lone Star Chapter since 2008, have offered to open up their home in Arlington to our chapter members for a social event on Saturday, August 1st, 2015 from 4p-8p.

While no alcohol will be served or allowed, this event will feature food, movie time and telling stories and getting to know your fellow members of the club.  Jack and Billie have a pool available for members who wish to swim.  There is an outside pool bath room but no shower available.  Be aware that the pool is deep with little shallow areas.  House and pool are not child friendly.  We recommend not brining children to the event as we cannot provide for their safety.

If you can join us, we’d love to have you RSVP to this invite with either a maybe (so they can give a caterer an initial number) or a Yes (so we can get a final count).

August 29th: Gimmick Rally.  First annual Gimmick Rally will occur but we need at minimum of 10 cars (with a driver and navigator).  This Rally is a scavenger hunt and is self-paced, non-timed and street-legal.  Brian George is leading the rally and pre-registration (which is letting Brian George know you want to participate) is required.

Update: September 12th: Half-day tour from Lone Star Park Come early to see the Auto Cross Group do some runs.  We’re working to make this a show and tell event for all BMWs in the area.  We will leave Lone Star Park about 1 p.m. and head somewhere interesting for dinner possibilities.  More details to come.

Whitewright Tour Maps Now Available

UPDATE Sat, June 20th: Half day tour to Whitewright, TX (sort-of) with brunch thrown in.  We’ll start in McKinney at the RaceTrac at 1004 E University Dr 9 a.m.  If we need to split the group into two run groups, we will use two different destinations.  Primary brunch destination is Cattleman’s Cafe in Blue Ridge (Gerald scoped it out and said if we get close to 20 people, they will not be able to fit us all).  The secondary destination is The Breakfast Stop in Boham.  Both maps may be used tomorrow, so please bring both along with you.  Raymond Mimick will be leading this tour so please let him know if you are coming along.

Maps: McKinney to Blue Ridge

Maps: McKinney to Bonham

Both routes cover a similar section of road and both will run through Whitewright for a short stop to take pictures if desired.

Whitewright Tour this Saturday and More

We have a tour to Whitewright, TX scheduled for this Saturday.  If you would like to participate (and possibly claim Father’s Day as an excuse), please let Raymond Mimick (rmimick@iname.com) know you will join us (to make sure we have everyone before we start).

Below is our latest news on the touring-front:

Generally, we have about 16 cars attending our tours as of June 2015.  We welcome all to join us.  With this many cars, we highly recommend purchasing a 40-channel CB radio (this is different than an FRS radio) to hear about road conditions and participate in group discussions (if this is your first time, this is not required to get a taste of the road).  Locally, a number of us have used Bonnie & Clyde’s off Harry Hines in Dallas.  The Midland radios have worked well and if you want to only receive announcements, the handheld version will work.

Please review the Touring Etiquette so we are all on the same page.

Sat, June 20th: Half day tour to Whitewright, TX (sort-of) with brunch thrown in.  We’ll start in McKinney at the RaceTrac at 1004 E University Dr 9 a.m. head up toward Sherman and stop near Whitewright (CJ’s Grand Street Cafe is closed for renovations; working on alternate in Bonham).  Maps are being prepared once we know our breakfast/brunch destination. Raymond Mimick will be leading this tour so please let him know if you are coming along.

July 25th: Talimena Scenic Drive from Hugo, TX to Queen Wilhelmina State Park and back again.  Book at hotel room for Friday night, 7/24 at HiWay Inn Express of Hugo (2111 E Jackson St Hugo, OK 74743  580-326-5100) and we’ll head out 8 a.m. and head to the Talimena Scenic Drive.  Please let Raymond know if you can attend.

New: August 1st: (Not a tour) We will have a social event at Jack & Billie’s House in Arlington, TX in the late afternoon/early evening.  More details to come.

New: August 29th: Gimmick Rally.
